There are many who argue that the Cox Plate is the absolute pinnacle of racing in the country.

While the Melbourne Cup is the biggest event in terms of size, wealth and spectacle, the Cox Plate is considered the ultimate for the purists and hardcore racing fans.

It is a Group 1 test around the boutique Moonee Valley racecourse, a track that is well known for having the shortest straight in Australian racing. That, combined with the tight turns and steep camber mean only the very best horse and rider partnership can prove themselves supreme.

The race itself is run over a 2040m distance and worth a huge $3,000,000 in prize money. It’s a weight for age contest meaning only the best of the best bother entering and even then only the champions can worry about winning it.

The Cox Plate is considered to be the weight for age championship of Australasia and it’s gaining an increasingly strong reputation internationally as well.

Dubbed ‘the race where legends are made’ there’s no doubting that only the pinnacle of Australian thoroughbreds are  represented in the Cox Plate winners list.

The race first took place back in 1922 and even then it wasn’t confined to locals, imported stallion Violencello claiming the race.

From day one it was a valuable contest though, the $1000 pounds on offer a huge incentive back in that era. From then on its continued to grow from strength to strength and the memories it delivers continue to add up.

Kingston Town is the Cox Plate king having won three in a row from 1980 to 1982. He’s the only horse to do so however a few have come pretty close.

Sunline won the race in 1999, it happened again in 2000 and in 2001 the champ was denied by just one rival to finish second. That rival was Northerly, he added a second Cox Plate title to his name the very next year in 2002.

Fields Of Omagh is another which has won two however it wasn’t quite as straight forward. After winning the event in 2003 he had to settle for second in 2004 and third in 2005 before bouncing back for a win in 2006.

The latest big thing in the world of Cox Plate’s though is undoubtedly So You Think. He was never threatened when he won it in 2009 and in 2010 he won be an equally crusiy margin. Some say he was a shoe in for a third but he was sold after running third in the 2010 Melbourne Cup to continue his career in Europe.

Today, the Cox Plate Carnival is bigger than ever. Thousands attend the tracks and thousands are laid down in bets.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup has again attracted a strong field following the hype of the Cox Plate.
